02How to choose
The space first, then the system.
When we advise on pergola applications, we start with how people use the space. A villa terrace fills up mainly in the evenings and at weekends. A restaurant terrace, however, has to serve every day, rain or shine. At a hotel pool, shade and airflow come first, while in a car park the task is to protect vehicles from sun, hail and snow.
Then we choose the roof type. When the louvres close, a louvred bioclimatic roof protects from rain; when they open, it gives shade and ventilation. A fabric retractable roof folds back along rails, which means the sky opens above you. Zip screens and glass panels close the sides, so the terrace stays in use on windy days and cool evenings.

Where can a pergola be used?
Pergolas work on villa and garden terraces, balconies and verandas. Restaurant, café and hotel terraces, pool and lounge areas, office and rooftop terraces are also typical pergola applications. For vehicles, there is the Carport with a fixed panel roof. Which series suits you depends on size, intensity of use and the need for side closure, and we clarify it during the survey or from your drawings.
Can homes and businesses use the same pergola?
Residential and commercial pergolas come from the same system families, but the series, size and extras differ. For example, SkyMax suits hotels, restaurants and large villa terraces, while SkyPro is a balanced choice for homes and businesses. Among the fabric roofs, Elegant serves homes and Avantgarde serves restaurants, cafés and hotels. On commercial projects we plan heating, lighting and side closure together at the survey.
Bioclimatic pergola or retractable roof pergola?
In a bioclimatic pergola, motorised aluminium louvres rotate. When they close they form a roof that protects from rain; when they open they give shade and ventilation. In a retractable roof pergola, a technical fabric roof folds back along rails and opens the sky. The better fit depends on intensity of use, side closure and the architecture, and our comparison page sets both families side by side.
Can a pergola be used in winter?
Yes. When you close the louvres of a bioclimatic system, the roof protects from rain and snow. Zip screens or glass panels between the posts also keep the wind out, while heaters and LED lighting extend the evening. We design the systems for rain, wind and snow conditions, and our technical team calculates the values for your project's size and location.
Do I need a permit for a pergola?
That depends on local planning rules, the building's management rules and whether the pergola is free-standing or connects to the building.
